The situation
Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.
A hypothetical renter in the upper unit of an older duplex decarboxylates and simmers an infusion on a Saturday. By Sunday evening the whole kitchen smells grassy, and the neighbor below mentions the smell reaching the shared stairwell. The range hood recirculates air through a carbon pad and does not vent outdoors.
- The renter turns off the stove, opens windows on opposite sides and runs a box fan in the doorway to push air outside.
- The next day the renter pulls the hood filter and finds it greasy and strongly scented.
- The renter degreases the hood, the cabinet tops and the wall near the stove and launders dish towels and curtains.
- The renter replaces the carbon pad and keeps the stairwell door closed during cooking afterward.
- The renter tells the neighbor what happened, apologizes and explains the steps taken.
In this invented outcome, the kitchen smell fades after a day or two and the stairwell smell clears with ventilation. The renter decides to avoid long simmering indoors and checks the lease before cooking with cannabis again. The lesson is that grease holds the odor and respectful communication matters.
The cleaning order in the example
Ventilate across the home
Open windows on opposite sides so air moves through, and use a fan to push it outdoors.
Remove washable parts
Take out hood filters and drip pans and wash them.
Degrease from the top down
Wipe the hood, cabinet tops, the wall and the backsplash with a degreasing cleaner.
Launder soft items
Wash towels, curtains and any nearby fabric.
Retest the next day
Smell the kitchen and stairwell after the home has been closed for an hour.
What this example illustrates
Cooking odor behaves like other kitchen odor, except that terpene smell is distinctive and many people recognize it immediately. Because it rides on grease, degreasing is more effective than a simmer pot.
Shared spaces change the problem. A duplex stairwell, a shared vent or an open window next door can carry smell to someone who did not choose it. Telling a neighbor and acting quickly can keep a small issue small.
Cooking with cannabis may be limited by a lease, a city rule or a home-sharing agreement. Read your documents, and do not rely on this page for permission or advice.
Common questions
- Would a stronger recirculating filter have fixed it?
- It might have reduced some smell but would not remove grease already on surfaces.
